Torana L34/A9X Group "C" Touring Car

L34/A9X
L34/A9X
  • The Torana commenced life as an SLR5000 LH Torana road car, sometime in 1974 it was lime green in colour and owned by Phil Arnull.
  • Phil Arnull added the L34 engine and original Bond cage and went racing and roading and it and it is believed that the L34 was still under warranty at this time
  • Graham Ryan who was an ex racer, owned the panel shop where Phil kept the car. Phil knew well in advance of the A9X option being produced as he and Harry Firth were good mates.
  • GMH sent Phil the A9X panels and the complete kit to A9X an L34 and at this time it changed to red/silver as per log book photo.
  • The A9X first raced at Lakeside on 23/7/77 where it was pranged. Phil had it back on the track quickly and ran at Amaroo on 13/8/77 then at Oran Park 9/9/77 where no body believed that the General would make such a racing car. A9X almost still a secret!
  • There were still some A9X issues at Sandown 10/9/77 where it was involved in a severe accident at The Causeway which also bent the A9X diff. Repaired again and went to Bathurst 1-2/10/77
  • Then Surfers 5/11/77, Sandown 4/2/78, Surfers 18/2/78, Oran Park 25/2/78 and then Amaroo 10/3/78.
  • It was about this time that I (Philip Lyon) bought the rolling chassis complete with bent diff (which I straightened) and a new good diff.
  • I registered the transfer with CAMS on 6/2/79 after nearly a year of re-building. The car was still in red over silver livery.
  • I first ran at Amaroo on 14/4/79 Touring Car round, Locker not assembled properly and car was diabolical.
  • The car was then regulary run at Amaroo Park and Oran Park touring car races during 1979-1980.
  • A racing A9X has no similarity to an LX Torana except some body work, I have completed a list of differences even down to windscreen wiper sweep ratio.

This is a unique car with much racing history and deserves to be rebuilt to is former glory.
